The College Conversations We Can't Afford to Delay
In May, we talked about 529 plans and saving for future education expenses. Those conversations are vital, having said that, college planning involves much more than finances.
Many of us don't begin talking to our kids about college until school and FAFSA applications are due. By then, there's a lot to sort through in a short time: applications, university options, fields of study, what summers will look like, what comes after graduation, etc.
Most of the answers we provide our children during these talks have financial implications. Intentionally or unintentionally, these could impact school affordability, our retirement and their education funding, the family’s cash flow and goals, or even our children’s future financial security. The impact of our answers could have long-term effects for our them beyond college funding. By thoughtfully anticipating and planning, on the other hand, we teach our children to maintain commitments—financial and otherwise.
A Midyear Financial Check-In: Adjusting the Course
Somehow, we’re already halfway through the year. For some, this season means we slow down and our cares fade away into the background. For others, especially working parents, summer is a hectic time while we juggle work and childcare. In either case, one very important thing gets overlooked: our finances.
Plans we made in January have slipped lower on our to-do list. And whether we’re off enjoying some alone time on the beach or corralling the kids, summer seems an unlikely time to get around to them. Yet, mid-year June is the perfect time for a financial check-in.
Imagine our financial plan as a road trip. We don’t ignore the map after plugging the destination into the GPS. Traffic changes. Sometimes we realize we took a detour we didn’t plan. A quick check-in doesn’t mean the trip is off track. It just helps us adjust the route before we get too far off course.
Planning Ahead for Education: 529 Accounts
Saving for college isn’t exactly the most thrilling topic. It can actually be terrifying. Not only do you have to acknowledge that your child is flying the nest, but college is so expensive! Not to mention, a good college education doesn’t guarantee your child a good job.
Paying tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars for an education that may not equal a job is a scary prospect. This is where helpful savings accounts like 529s can really help take some of the weight off our shoulders.
So, what is a 529 plan and how can it help? Let’s start with the basics.
A Forecast for Fun, Not Overspending
Now that spring cleaning is behind us, it’s time to turn our attention to something a lot more fun: summer. Longer days, warmer weather, a more relaxed vibe, and for many, no school on the calendar. What’s not to love?
Of course, summer fun is not always sunshine and savings. It often brings a wave of expenses right along with it. While April might feel early to think about August plans, getting a head start now can help you soak up summer without sweating your budget later.

Spring Cleaning…and Your Finances?
With warmer weather (any day now, we promise!) on its way, many of us are starting to think about updating our décor for the spring season, putting away our heavy outerwear, confronting the mysterious tumbleweeds of pet hair behind the couch, and, yes, doing a deep spring clean now that the sun is shedding light on dusty shelves and corners!
It’s not just our homes that need a good refresh—our finances often do too. Because let’s be honest—sometimes the real cobwebs aren’t in the corners of our homes…they’re in our finances.
Use this momentum to give your finances their own spring cleaning.
