Love, Money, & Meaningful Moments, Budgeting for Valentine’s Day without Breaking the Bank

This month, Revival Wealth is emphasizing the month of love, highlighting how meaningful expressions of care are possible at every income level. With thoughtful budgeting and intentional spending, you can show your love without breaking the bank.

Around February and Valentine’s Day, many feel pressured to plan a grand romantic gesture with an equally grand price tag for a once-a-year expression of love. But meaningful, reasonably priced gestures can show your love throughout the year, not just on one day.

Stuck for ideas about how to spend Valentine’s Day—or any other date night? Try some of these creative, easy to budget ideas.

Inventive and Inexpensive Date Ideas

  1. Skip the overpriced Valentine’s Day dinner and cook at home instead. Yes, you cook at home almost every night, but you can make it special by creating a romantic, candle-lit setting, picking a fun theme, or arranging a cook off challenge with a mystery ingredient.
  2. Play a “Life Story” game together. You and your partner choose three meaningful memories and write one line about it on a note card. Shuffle the cards and take turns guessing which memory it was.
  3. Search your city for free museum days, community events, parks and recreation department events, street fairs, or other local events. If nothing’s going on in your town, visit an online museum together! Many museums around the world offer free virtual tours of their collection.
  4. Check out pub quizzes and trivia nights on offer in your city. These are often no or low-cost or take place during happy hour.
  5. Game night! Play cards, a board game, or challenge each other to a video game.
  6. Create a romantic scavenger hunt at home. Each partner hides small things around the house, a love note, a favorite photo of the two of you, a memento from a holiday or vacation, and writes clues to help the other find them. First one to find all the items wins!
  7. Ramp up movie night by pretending to be at a drive-in! Set up your laptop (or hang up a sheet if you have a projector available), arrange lawn chairs, blankets, and pillows, and watch a movie under the stars.
  8. Make a picnic at home. Arrange blankets and pillows on the living room floor, string some fairy lights or light candles for romance, and spend the evening chatting over homemade snacks.
  9. Build something together. Maybe you have a neglected LEGO kit laying around, or an unfinished art project. Alternatively, you can find kits for making birdhouses, models, 3D puzzles, etc. at most any budget.
  10. Buy an inexpensive star projector (you can find several for under $30) and create an indoor star gazing night. Lay out blankets and pillows on the floor, put on soft music, dim the lights, and gaze at the “stars” while telling stories, sharing memories, or building future dreams.

Valentine's Day Gifts for Under $30

Many people now avoid going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day. Overpriced pre-fixe menus and crowded restaurants don’t create a nice, romantic setting. Skip the overpriced Valentine’s Day dinner and cook at home instead.

The good news is that it’s easier than you think to give creative and heartfelt gifts this Valentine’s Day that won’t cost the earth.

  1. Create a Memory Jar. Decorate and fill a jar or a pretty vase with slips of paper that hold memories, reasons why you love your partner, or “coupons” for things like foot rubs or offers to do the difficult chores like taking down and washing the curtains.
  2. Set up a spa night. Buy some inexpensive face and foot masks, light some candles, and invite your partner to relax with feet in warm soapy water while you provide a shoulder rub.
  3. Print out some of your favorite pictures of the two of you and make a collage. You could also write out some memories or favorite bits of romantic poetry and frame those alongside the photos.
  4. Create a personalized music playlist and include a note that explains each song’s significance to you.
  5. Groupon is still a thing! Look for a fun activity, a spa treatment, restaurant, or a completely new experience you two can do together.
  6. For the chocolate lovers in your life, make some individual serving hot chocolate kits. You can add different flavors like mini marshmallows, mint chocolate chips, chili powder…the sky is the limit! Decorate the bags with ribbon and put them all in a nice gift bag or basket.
  7. Cook a romantic candlelit dinner at home. Tell your partner to dress up, and surprise them with a favorite dish, what you ate on your first date, or your wedding meal.
  8. Write love letters to each other and read them out loud. Make a night out of reading them and connecting.
  9. Fill a jar with Hershey’s kisses and little notes of compliments or things you love about your partner.
  10. A lot of theatre productions, especially from British theatre companies, are available online, sometimes free or for a small fee. Dress in your finest for the occasion while enjoying the production on your laptop. You don’t even have to wait for intermission to enjoy a glass of bubbly!

Inexpensive dates and gifts don’t reflect a lack of care, often, they reflect thoughtfulness and intention. You might even find it easier to make room for meaningful moments more than once a year. After all, love isn’t about how much you spend, it’s about how present, thoughtful, and intentional you are.
